Vick has evolved into a complete quarterback

Cowboys jersey
PHILADELPHIA (AP)—The new Michael Vick(notes) makes big plays with his arm instead of his legs.
Vick’s evolution as quarterback is summed up perfectly by the way he operated a hurry-up offense in Philadelphia’s 28-3 win at Jacksonville on Sunday. He’s no longer a run-first guy who quickly takes off with the ball if his primary option is covered. Rather, he’s found success in the pocket.
Vick has an even bigger challenge coming up when the Eagles (2-1) host Washington cheap nfl jerseys
(1-2) in Donovan McNabb’s(notes) return to Philadelphia.
But the way Vick is playing now, he might be a better fit for the Eagles than even McNabb, who led them to five NFC championship games in 11 seasons.
“I think both of them are tremendous and playing very well right now, so I’m not going to get into comparisons,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said Monday.
With 1:37 left in the first half against Jacksonville, the Eagles got the ball at the Jaguars 47 with no timeouts remaining. The seven-play sequence that followed showed how far Vick has come in his development.
Vick withstood a blitz, took a hit and threw the ball away on first down. The old Vick might have taken a sack by trying to escape the rush, or thrown an interception by passing into coverage.
Vick got pressured on the next play and was nearly in the grasp when he dumped a short pass for a 2-yard gain. Once again, he didn’t take a sack or attempt a risky pass.
On third-and-8, Vick threw a 21-yard strike over the middle to Brent Celek(notes). It was a beautiful pass in traffic that was out of the reach of the defenders and hit Celek in stride, keeping the drive going.
After a deep incompletion, Vick fired a 14-yard out to Jeremy Maclin(notes), who failed to get out of bounds. Vick alertly rushed everyone to the line of scrimmage and spiked the ball.
That set up first down at the Jaguars 16 with 12 seconds left. The coaches called for maximum protection on the next play, leaving the tight end, fullback and running back in for extra protection. Maclin and DeSean Jackson(notes) were Vick’s only targets. He couldn’t take a sack or the first half would end. If he ran, he had to score or the clock would expire.
Vick dropped back and focused his eyes on Jackson. He felt pressure despite having eight blockers, darted out of the way, reset his feet, looked off Jackson and threw a backdoor pass to Maclin coming across the end zone for a touchdown that gave the Eagles a 14-3 lead.
The old Vick probably wouldn’t have waited for Maclin to come open underneath. He would’ve run once he saw Jackson was blanketed by the secondary.
But the new No. 7 wears green and white instead of red and black, and is playing like a complete quarterback. This version of Vick is better than the dynamic superstar who went to three Pro Bowls in six seasons with Atlanta.
Vick’s progress can be measured by the discipline he showed not just on that touchdown Colts jersey
pass, but the entire two-minute drive.
“He’s being very decisive right now in his decision-making,” Reid said.
Vick benefited from watching McNabb run Philadelphia’s offense last year, and improved his study habits and throwing mechanics. It helps he has excellent teachers in Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, and perhaps more importantly, he has outstanding receivers. In Atlanta, Vick had to do it all. Here, he has a strong supporting cast.
“About his study habits, he’s really cranked down on those and we have to kind of kick him out of the building here,” Reid said. “He’s here all the time and that’s a good thing. I don’t know if that’s the way it was always in his career. And then, he has some pretty good receivers there to throw to. I’m not saying he didn’t in Atlanta, but I’m saying here he has some pretty good receivers that know that game and he can put it out there and they can go get it.”
In 2 1/2 games, Vick has completed 60.7 percent of his passes for 750 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. He has a passer rating of 110.2, and also has 170 yards rushing and one TD.
Vick has helped the Eagles significantly in the red zone, an area where they struggled under McNabb and in the brief time Kevin Kolb(notes) was the starter. With Vick behind center, the offense has seven TDs in eight trips inside an opponent’s 20-yard line.
“If you go back to my days in Atlanta, I thought we always did a good job in the red zone and had a high efficiency and percentage in the red zone and were able to score a lot of points,” Vick said. “My eyes light up when we get down there and I think everybody else on this football team does, too. You have to go out there and put the ball in the end zone. You work so hard to get down there and you don’t want field goals, you want touchdowns.”
Vick earned the starting job with a pair of dazzling performances after Kolb sustained a concussion. He backed up Reid’s flip-flop decision to make him the starter with another stellar effort against the Jaguars.
Vick threw for 291 yards and three TDs and ran for another. For the first time in Cowboys jersey
his career, he’s had consecutive 250-yard games and three straight games with a passer rating above 100.
“He’s worked so hard to get back where he needs to be and it’s a great opportunity for him to go out there and prove everybody wrong,” Jackson said.

Steelers look scary – and Big Ben hasn’t played

TAMPA, Fla. – The last time the Pittsburgh Steelers took the field at Raymond James Stadium, they walked away with their sixth Super Bowl title.
On Sunday, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin exited the field again looking almost as exultant as that moment in 2009. Tomlin thrust his fists to the crowd and stared with a powerful glare after the Steelers improved to 3-0 after a 38-13 thrashing of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The NFL season is only three nfl jerseys
weeks old, but Pittsburgh is once again playing like a champion and a prohibitive favorite.
And the Steelers don’t even have their two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback. Ben Roethlisberger(notes) isn’t due to return to the starting lineup until Oct. 17, but he could be returning to a situation where the table is set.
This was hardly what anybody expected from the Steelers to this point.
As owner Dan Rooney, who took in his final game Sunday before heading back to his diplomat job in Ireland, walked through the locker room, he was asked about his team’s resiliency. Having run the team since 1975 and having been part of the team since he was born in 1932, Rooney has seen it all and isn’t wont to overreact.
“This is as much as adversity as I’ve seen, but these guys have picked [Roethlisberger] up, they really have,” Rooney said. “They’ve rallied together as good as I’ve seen.”
While it’s absurd to think the Steelers will maintain this pace over a 16-game season and into the playoffs, they punctuated their start with a dominant victory Sunday. If nothing else, Pittsburgh showed what it’s capable of and that should be scary to the rest of the league.
Of course, you can qualify this by saying it’s early, that Tampa Bay isn’t as good as its 2-0 start. But this performance was decisive and thorough. Moreover, it comes in the face of those who thought this season was going to be a struggle to make up for the first four games of Roethlisberger’s suspension. A month ago, most analysts thought the Steelers would be lucky to go 2-2.
“We all heard that stuff and that’s fine,” veteran wide receiver Hines Ward(notes) said. “But we have a lot of people in this locker room who understand how to play together and get things done when things aren’t exactly how we want them to be.”
Leading the way is Tomlin, who has made it his personal mission to tap into every motivational tactic he can find to make his team believe it can be great, even without Roethlisberger.
This week, Tomlin threw little barbs in every direction. With 35-year-old quarterback Charlie Batch(notes) getting his first start since 2007, Tomlin harped on the old guys. Batch took over for injured backup Dennis Dixon(notes).
“Yeah, he kept saying, ‘Don’t be a declining veteran,’ ” said linebacker James Farrior(notes), one of Pittsburgh’s 17 guys on the roster who are 30 or older. Farrior is one of three (Batch and Flozell Adams(notes) are the others) 35-year-olds, which is downright ancient in this game. “Of course he’s talking to me and Hines and Aaron [Smith] and Brett [Keisel]. Most of us older guys, that just goes in one ear and out the other.”
Really? Because it sure seems like the Steelers are playing with a “We’ll Cowboys jersey
prove you wrong” mentality.
“Anybody who says they predicted we would be 3-0, they’re lying,” Ward said. “We know that, but that’s OK.”Colts jersey

It also seems to be OK if the Steelers play make-believe. After the game, Tomlin went so far as to call Raymond James Stadium a “hostile” environment. When a reporter pointed out that almost half the stadium seemed to be wearing black-and-gold rather than the home pewter-and-red, Tomlin admitted that he occasionally indulges in fantasy.
“We like to get painted in a corner and I was probably looking for it,” Tomlin said with a sly grin. “We like to use the us-against-the-world mentality.”
With Batch starting, the logical thinking was that the Steelers would again keep things close to the vest, particularly after his first pass of the game was intercepted. Instead, Pittsburgh played aggressive. On their third possession, the Steelers opened with a double reverse to wide receiver Mike Wallace(notes) for a loss of a yard, then Batch went deep to Wallace for a 46-yard touchdown pass.
Two possessions later, the Steelers kept the playbook wide open as Batch again went deep to Wallace. Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib(notes) missed an interception and tipped the ball to Wallace to give the Steelers a 21-6 lead.
At that point, the game was basically over. The Steelers grinded out a 79-yard drive to finish the first half with a 28-6 lead and then spent the rest of the game hammering young Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman(notes). He was sacked on each of Tampa Bay’s first two possessions of the second half and the third possession ended with Keisel returning a tipped interception 79 yards for a score to make it 38-6.
In three games, the Steelers have forced 10 turnovers. That works out to 53.3 for the season, which is unreasonable to expect.
That’s where the return of Roethlisberger comes in. While he is sure to get plenty of criticism for his off-field behavior, there is no doubting his talent. Roethlisberger is a dynamic passer, even if he is somewhat unconventional. He has twice posted a season quarterback rating of more than 100 in the past three years.
And he’s going to be driven.
“If we can go 4-0 without Ben and we know what he can do once he gets back out there, we’re going to be fine,” Ward said. “I know Ben, he’s disappointed because he’s not with us, but he’ll do fine when he gets back to our team. He had a great training camp, really flawless, really improved his reads.”
Left tackle Max Starks(notes), who has been with the Steelers for seven seasons, including two Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Super Bowls, likes what he sees, even without Roethlisberger.
“I really think this is one of the two best teams we’ve had since I got here,” Starks said. “Really, I believe that right now and we still haven’t gotten Ben back.”

26 sep 10 A new nation at Heinz Field

An electric atmosphere filled Heinz Field on Tuesday as ninth grade students from the Pittsburgh Public Schools gathered for the kickoff of 9TH Grade Nation.
Head coach Mike Tomlin, along with Charlie Batch and Max Starks, offered their encouragement to the students who nfl jerseys
are part of the Class of 2014 and embarking on an exciting time in their lives, high school.
Tomlin got the kids fired up, asking them to “hear it” for Ninth Grade Nation. When he asked for a little more for the Steelers, the cheers got even louder.
“I’m here because I care about you,” Tomlin told the students. “We’ve all been out there in the stands. Maybe not literally, but we’ve been there. I was in ninth grade once upon a time. I was a trip.”
The students are all eligible to take part in the Pittsburgh Promise, which offers college scholarships to Pittsburgh Public School students who maintain a certain grade point average. Those who meet the grade criteria would receive up to $10,000 a year toward their college education.
And to get to that point the students were encouraged to do something that Saints jersey
Tomlin himself did when he was younger – to dream big.
“The greatest advice given to me, and I really listened and heeded it – dream big,” said Tomlin. “Anybody out there dream big? Raise your hands and stand up if you dream big.”Steelers jersey

After a thunderous reply, Tomlin continued with a message of inspiration for the students, encouraging them to stay on the right path.
“If you are going to dream big there are a couple of things that go with it,” said Tomlin. “If you are going to dream big you have to dream in great detail. The great detail is planning. If you want to be an architect where are you going to go - to an architect school? Research it. Find out details. Get the answers of how you are going to get into the institution. Get a degree.
“Dreaming big with great detail provides the plan. Then you have to execute the plan. Is anybody capable of that out there? I am glad we have a bunch of big dreamers here. I encourage you to dream big in great detail. I have a plan for you. And with that plan you have to have the fortitude to put it action and make sure your daily actions lead you toward the dream.”
Tomlin shared his dream when he was in high school and is proof positive that it can be achieved if you stick with it and don’t let distractions get in the way.
“My chosen vocation was football,” said Tomlin. “I had friends that San Diego Chargers jersey
wanted to do different things, similar to the friends that you guys have. I wasn’t interested in smoking dope. I wasn’t interested in skipping school. I wasn’t interested in doing anything that wasn’t going to make this football guy.
“I dare you to be so bold. I dare you because it’s hard. But do it because you will make us all proud and continue to add to the legacy of Pittsburgh and make this the greatest place to live in the world.”

Starting Vick a good move for Eagles

Indianapolis Colts jersey
Every week, the experts of FOX NFL Sunday will candidly reveal their observations and make their opinions known as they prepare for the top-rated prename telecast — seen each Sunday at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT. We'll share with you some of the highlights from Curt, Terry, Howe, Jimmy and Michael grabbed from their weekly conference call with insider John Karnack.
This week, Czar probes the FOX NFL Sunday crew on nfl jerseys
the Eagles' QB situation and the Dallas Cowboys.
Czar: Andy Reid said after he looked at the film of their win over Detroit, he had to stick with Michael Vick. What do you all believe?
Howe Long: I think a lot of things went into his decision. I think the injuries to the offensive line, the loss of Leonard Weaver, maybe realizing he couldn’t protect Kevin Kolb. He probably showed up to work and got a sense of the locker room and realized he had to start him.
Jimmy Johnson: I said it on the show last week. Vick is the best player and he has to play him. Andy made the right decision.
Curt Menifee: I have to think that Kolb sees it, too.
Terry Bradshaw: I’d love to know what Andy would have done if Donovan McNabb was still his quarterback. I mean, would he have started Vick over Donovan? I mean, he’s doing it to a young quarterback that he has been tooting his horn and telling us how good he’s going to be. But the bottom Saints jersey
line is they really don’t have much on Kolb to suggest that he’s really special. They just think he’s going to be a great talent. They don’t really don’t have anything to base that on. The bottom line is that Andy Reid wants to win games and he could see that Kolb might have been sacked 10 times last week and Vick wasn’t. I think Andy never should have told anyone that he was going back to Kolb regardless of how Vick played.
Czar: OK, so now what do you think of the McNabb trade?
JJ: I think the jury is still out there.
HL: Donovan looked great last week. But can he keep it up? He’s lost weight and looks good.
JJ: What hasn’t been said a lot is that if they were going to keep McNabb they were going to have to pay him a ton of money.
HL: He wanted the same money that the top three quarterbacks are getting. But if Vick plays well, they will be able to sign him to an extension.
JJ: Remember, it was a problem with McNabb every time they put Vick in there last season, too.
HL: The other thing is that Michael has made great progress as a quarterback.
JJ: He’s throwing the ball better than he has ever thrown it.
Michael Straphang: One of their receivers told me last week San Diego Chargers jersey
that he equates the way Vick throws the ball to the way Ken Griffin swings a bat. Just so smooth, so effortless and so natural. I agree with Jimmy. It is just so much fun to watch him play.
JJ: If Kolb was starting this week, nobody would watch this Jacksonville game. But Vick gives me a reason to turn the TV on.
MS: With Vick there is always a chance to see something exciting.

24 sep 10 Cowboys licking their wounds following loss to Bears

The Chicago Bears would have you believe they knocked some intimidation into the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.
The Bears prevailed 27-20 at Cowboys Stadium and there were some big hits, particularly downfield. What was the damage? Well, it’s hard to say if it was the result of specific big hits, but the Cowboys listed wide receiver Dez Bryant(notes) on the injury report today, saying he did not practice as the result of football jerseys
a rib injury. Tight end Jason Witten(notes) reportedly suffered a concussion in the game as well.
Witten is expected to play on Sunday, and he practiced today. Meanwhile, the Bears hope they’ve put some shots on film that will strike fear in future opponents. One of the biggest shots was delivered by linebacker Lance Briggs(notes) on wide receiver Roy Williams, who held on for a catch and popped back up quickly.
“The thing we want to do is when guys come across the middle, we just want to make sure that they know they’re going to get hit,” free safety Chris Harris(notes) said. “We’re going to try to punish you for catching the ball if you catch it. That’s kind of the mentality we want to have.
“That’s one thing that (defensive coordinator) Rod Marinelli is kind of San Francisco 49ers jersey
bringing back here, that whole Monsters of the Midway thing. We’re buying into it. We just want to send a message that if you come across the middle, you’ll get hit. We definitely want to have a swagger about us, a demeanor, a little nastiness to us.”
The New England Patriots made it official today, placing running back Kevin Faulk(notes) injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
Drafted in the second round in 1999 out of LSU, Faul, 34, has been a prolific third-down back.
He's the Patriots’ all-time leader in all-purpose yards (12,247) and kickoff return yards (4,098) as well as the franchise’s all-time leading return specialist with 5,030 combined return yards (4,098 kick return yards and 932 punt return yards).
He ranks fifth in Patriots history in rushing yards (3,550), fourth in receptions (424), tenth in pass receiving yards (3,667) and sixth in total punt return yards (932).
Faulk recorded the longest non-touchdown kickoff return in team history when he covered 95 yards on a return against the New York Jets in 1999.
For his career, he has played in 154 games and has accumulated 3,550 yards rushing on 847 attempts for a 4.2-yard average with 16 touchdowns, caught 424 passes for 3,667 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns, returned 181 kicks for 4,098 yards and two touchdowns and returned 99 punts for 932 yards. He is one of just six NFL players this decade to total 3,000 rushing yards and 3,000 receiving yards (Tiki Barber, Brian Westbrook(notes), Marshall Faulk, Michael Pittman(notes) and LaDanian Tomlinson).Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

Faulk is the Patriots’ all-time leader in receptions by a running Chicago Bears jersey
back, totaling 424 career receptions.
He is the 26th running back in NFL history to reach 400 receptions and his 3,667 receiving yards are third among active NFL running backs.

Moyes felt like grabbing fan after bottle attack

Indianapolis Colts jersey
BRENTFORD, England (AP)—Everton manager David Moyes said he had to stop himself from grabbing a Brentford fan who threw at bottle at the Premier League club’s supporters after a League Cup match.
Brentford fans Brentford spilled onto the pitch after nfl jerseys
Phil Jagielka’s missed penalty kick gave the third-tier club a 4-3 shootout win over Everton on Tuesday. The third-round match was level at 1-1 after extra time.
“I thought it was terrible—I saw a fan throw a bottle into our supporters,” Moyes said. “I said to him, ‘I saw your face. I saw who you were.’ He got a bottle and went right up and threw it right into the middle of our supporters.
“I didn’t grab him. I wanted to but obviously that would have brought more attention to the situation.”
Moyes offered to help police find the alleged culprit.
The loss compounded Everton’s dire start to the season. The Merseyside Saints jersey
team is yet to win in the Premier League and is next to last in the standings after five matches.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP)—Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber attended a groundbreaking ceremony for the renovations to PGE Park that will prepare the stadium for the Portland Timbers’ jump to the league.
The Timbers had to wait to make major renovations to the stadium until after the Triple-A Portland Beavers baseball team concluded their season. The stadium changes will include full bowl seating, a new club lounge, team store and a new entry from the street.
The Timbers begin MLS play next season. The team currently plays in San Diego Chargers jersey
the U.S. Soccer Federation D-2 Pro League, considered a step below MLS.
The team also announced that season tickets in 15 sections had sold out for the upcoming season, and all but one suite was reserved.

Dream showdown becomes headache

Indianapolis Colts jersey
A knee injury to Thierry Henry has sabotaged Major League Soccer’s dream showdown between its two biggest international stars and delivered a storm of criticism to the league’s doorstep.
Henry’s injury means the New York Red Bulls star will not be present when his team visits the Los Angeles Galaxy (featuring David Beckham and Landon Donovan) on Friday night in a match that was being billed as the biggest regular-season game in cheap nfl jerseys
MLS history.
However, the Frenchman’s absence has not been able to quiet the barbs being aimed at the MLS hierarchy following the decision to simply fine Henry $2,000 for his actions against FC Dallas last weekend that left opposing goalkeeper Kevin Hartman badly injured.
After Mehdi Ballouchy scored for New York, Henry ran up to the ball and attempted to smash it into the empty net. Unfortunately, Hartman had already placed his own foot behind the ball to kick it away, and the resulting impact damaged the medial ligaments in his knee badly enough that he is expected to miss several weeks of action.
Referee Hilario Grajeda neglected to issue Henry a second yellow card, one that would have come with an automatic suspension for the Galaxy showdown. Then, the league’s disciplinary committee issued a fine which amounts to no more than around one-fifth of Henry’s daily salary. They imposed no further sanctions.
The decision protected the league’s marquee matchup – at least until Henry’s injury was revealed – but attracted anger from several quarters.
“The members of the disciplinary committee should be embarrassed and ashamed,” Hartman’s agent Ron Waxman told the Washington Post. “It’s either no punishment or there must be a suspension. I’m sorry to discover that they’ve established a double standard for the treatment of Bills jersey
their marquee players as opposed to the treatment of their rank and file.”
Galaxy star Donovan also entered the dispute – and his comments may not be taken kindly by the Red Bulls, especially since there is no love lost between the teams.
“That’s definitely a yellow card,” Donovan told the LA Daily News. “It’s a foolish play, I think Henry knows that. The reality is, you might have ended [Hartman’s] season, and that’s unacceptable.”
Like it or not, the ugly incident has only added extra spice to Friday’s clash, even with Henry ruled out.
Quinn proposes EPL wage disclosure
The English Premier League is set to discuss a revolutionary new system which would allow clubs access to the salary details of every player in the league.
The concept, proposed by Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn, is aimed at offering greater transparency and reducing the power wielded by player agents.
Quinn feels his idea can help to keep ever-escalating EPL salaries in check, and prevent agents from being able to exaggerate their players’ earnings when discussing contracts with another interested club.
Yet while Quinn’s plan has gained some support from other club chairmen, it is likely to be strongly opposed by the players’ union, the Professional Footballers Association.
Italian strike off – for now
Fans of Italian soccer shouldn’t get too concerned over the proposed strike for this weekend’s round of matches.
No resolution over regulatory disputes between the players’ union and club owners has been reached and if discussions continue to stall, a strike could once again be a realistic possibility.
A source close to the discussions told Yahoo! Sports that Nov. 49ers jersey
14 “would be one option” for a strike date by the players, which could disrupt a huge weekend on the Italian soccer calendar.
Inter Milan and AC Milan are set to square off in a local derby, Juventus is due to face Roma, while the always-spicy Sicilian derby between Palermo and Catania also is on the schedule.

Cincinnati is a below-.500 team in September

Indianapolis Colts jersey
The St. Louis Cardinals know they have no margin for error if they are to keep their fading hopes of winning the NL Central alive.
With the way they’ve played against non-contenders, even six remaining games versus the Pittsburgh Pirates don’t look like a sure thing.
The Cardinals desperately need to pull off a three-game sweep of football jersey
the majors’ worst team starting Tuesday night at PNC Park, where the Pirates try to avoid moving to the brink of their first 100-loss season since 2001.
Cincinnati is a below-.500 team in September, but St. Louis (77-72) has made sure the Reds still have a comfortable division lead. The Cardinals have lost 23 of 35, dropping all seven series against teams with losing records.
St. Louis is 9-5 against winning clubs in that stretch and took three of four from San Diego over the weekend. But it blew a chance to pick up more momentum in Monday’s makeup game at Florida, where Brad Davis’(notes) second-inning grand slam off Chris Carpenter(notes) was the difference in the Marlins’ 4-0 win.
“(Carpenter) wasn’t perfect in that one inning and they get four runs,” manager Tony La Russa said. “That shouldn’t be enough to beat us.”
The Cardinals are 6-3 against the Pirates (51-98), but they dropped two of Chargers jersey
three in Pittsburgh from Aug. 23-25. Pirates rookie Neil Walker(notes) drove in six runs to help his team win the final two meetings.
Walker continued his impressive second half over the weekend, homering twice and driving in five to engineer a sweep of Arizona. The second baseman hit a two-run shot in the eighth inning Sunday to lift Pittsburgh to a 4-3 win.
“There’s a lot to play for this month,” Walker told the Pirates’ official website. “It’d be easy to pack it in and call it a season in these last couple weeks, but I think everybody feels like it’s very important for us to kind of form as a team because, obviously, this time of year it’s a tough go.”
It’s been a particularly tough second half for Paul Maholm(notes) (7-15, 5.36 ERA), who is 2-9 with a 7.07 ERA in his last 14 starts. The left-hander surrendered seven runs - two earned - over 3 2-3 innings Wednesday in an 8-7 loss to the Mets.
Maholm is 3-4 with a 3.41 ERA in 12 starts versus St. Louis, with Albert Pujols(notes) going 15 for 21 against him since 2008. Matt Holliday(notes) is 2 for 16 lifetime against Maholm, but both hits were homers.
The Cardinals will give the ball to Jake Westbrook(notes) (2-3, 3.26), who Bears jersey
has received little run support since coming over from Cleveland but didn’t need much Thursday. The right-hander used his sharp sinker to hold the Padres to six hits over eight innings in a 4-0 win.
“When I get ground balls, I feel like I’m doing my job,” Westbrook said. “This was the first zero I put up in a long time. It feels good.”
Westbrook gave up four runs over six innings in a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh on Aug. 25.

Kagawa brace gives Dortmund 3-1 win over Schalke

Dallas Cowboys jersey
BERLIN, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa struck twice to help steer his team to a 3-1 win over hosts Schalke 04 on Sunday, moving them up to third place in the Bundesliga.
It was the fourth straight defeat and the worst start to a season for big spenders Schalke, leaving the runners-up of last season anchored at the bottom of the table. They finished the game with 10 men after a second booking for defender Nicolas Plestan.
Japan’s Kagawa, one of the Bundesliga’s revelations after Borussia bought him for 350,000 euros from the Japanese second division, struck from close range in the 20th and 58th minutes. Robert Lewandowski added a third goal late in the game to lift Borussia to third place on nfl jersey
nine points.
“This is my worst day at Schalke,” coach Felix Magath told reporters. “I have never experienced such a start.
“The team is insecure and the defeats have taken their toll. I have never seen the team like that.”
Mainz lead the standings on 12 points from four games with Hoffenheim second on 10 after their 2-2 draw against Kaiserslautern on Saturday.
On a day of big Bundesliga rivalries, Hamburg substitute Mladen Petric volleyed a goal from 16 metres with two minutes left in the game to rescue a 1-1 draw against city rivals St Pauli and lift Hamburg to fifth place on eight points.
KIESSLING INJURED
Bayer Leverkusen drew 0-0 with Nuremberg but had striker Stefan Kiessling taken off with an ankle injury. Team officials said the Germany international could be out for several weeks.
Champions Bayern Munich, who have not scored in the Bundesliga since Aug. 20, drew 0-0 at home against Cologne on Saturday and are in ninth place on five points.
Borussia, who hit the crossbar three times, outplayed Schalke, who lost their San Francisco 49ers jersey
Champions League opener in mid-week, and the visitors came close when Neven Subotic hit the bar after 12 minutes.
Dortmund kept up the pressure and Kagawa got a deserved goal in the 20th minute, dancing around three defenders before beating Neuer with a deflected left-footed shot.
With Schalke’s defence in disarray, Dortmund could have added another just before halftime when Kevin Grosskreutz hit the bar with a cross and Subotic twice saw his rebounds saved.
Kagawa took advantage of Schalke’s poor defence to tap in a Jakub Blaszczykowski cross in the 58th minute for his third goal of the season.
Schalke’s big-name strikers, Dutchman Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Raul, were largely shut out with the Spaniard choking under pressure from defender Mats Hummels.
Lewandowski headed in Dortmund’s third in the 86th before Huntelaar struck three minutes later to cut the deficit with his first goal of the season.
MILAN, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Inter Milan captain Javier Zanetti was allowed to return home with the squad after having hospital tests on chest pains following Sunday’s 2-1 win at Palermo.
“It’s nothing to worry about. He is returning to Milan with us,” Inter coach Rafael Benitez told Sky television.
The 37-year-old Argentine continues to astound fans with his all-action displays despite his age and his decision to stay on the pitch despite significant pain sums up his professionalism.
“I took a blow from a ball in my lower abdomen but I couldn’t stop Buffalo Bills jersey
despite the great pain, we were winning,” he joked to Inter’s TV channel.
“When I went back into the dressing-room my chest felt blocked so I called the doctor and we went to hospital for some precautionary checks. I want to reassure everyone I’m fine.”

Ferguson rules out Villa move for Owen

Indianapolis Colts jersey
LONDON (AFP) - Gerard Houllier is wasting his time thinking he might sign Michael Owen for Aston Villa, according to Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.
Houllier revealed earlier in the week that he would welcome the opportunity to work with Owen again following their successful time together at Liverpool.
Owen's lack of regular action for nfl throwback jerseys
United prompted suggestions that the 30-year-old could be on his way to Villa Park in the January transfer window.
However, Red Devils boss Ferguson is not planning to let the forward leave and has reassured Owen he will feature enough this season.
"I'm not aware of Gerard wanting him but, anyway, he's wasting his time there," Ferguson told The People.
"I understand Michael's frustration, but Dimitar Berbatov has started the season so well.
"He'll start against Scunthorpe in the Carling Cup and he'll get enough football this season."
Owen has started only five Premier League games for United since moving to Old Trafford in 2009 and has made three substitute appearances this season after playing the opening 45 minutes of the Community Shield.
SYDNEY (AP)—Adelaide continued its unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 away draw with Brisbane while Newcastle posted its first win, 2-0 over Perth, in weekend matches in Australian football’s A-League.
Central Coast moved up to second with a 0-0 draw with Gold Coast on Sunday— leaving it with only one loss from seven games—while league newcomers, the Melbourne Heart, improved to seventh with a 2-1 win over Wellington.
Newcastle’s first win from six games improved its championship position Chicago Bears jersey
and dropped Perth to third place in a tightening league. Six points separate the third and seventh-placed teams.
A brilliant volley by Michael Bridges gave Newcastle a 1-0 lead after 10 minutes but it wasn’t until Labinot Haliti scored in the 89th minute that the Jets’ first win was secure.
“It has been a long time coming,” Newcastle coach Branko Culina said. “I think we deserved a lot better than having to wait six weeks for a win but in the end I think the players have done themselves and the club proud.”
Culina said Newcastle’s confidence had been boosted by Bridges’ early goal.
“That is the name of the game—to score goals and win games,” he said. “We haven’t done that in the first five games so it makes it tough but I keep saying that we have been playing some really good football but it doesn’t get noticed when you don’t win games.”
Adelaide took the lead against Brisbane with a 28th-minute goal from Matthew Leckie but Brisbane equalized just seven minutes later through Thomas Broich. Both teams had chances to win but weren’t able to capitalize on scoring opportunities.
“I think it was a fair result. We had the best chances to win the game, especially a few good ones, and they had some chances, too,” Adelaide coach Rini Coolen said. “We’re still happy with the one point at the moment.”
Brisbane coach Ange Postecoglou said his team had improved after a slow first half.
“I wasn’t happy with how we started, but to the boys’ credit, we did really well in the second half,” he said. “We put them under more pressure and looked good going forward.”
The Melbourne Victory fought out a 0-0 draw with North Queensland New Orleans Saints jersey
on Saturday night, allowing the Victory to cling to fourth place in the league after playing three games in six days.
“It was a tough three matches and we have spoken about two aspects of physical fatigue and mental fatigue and I think the boys mentally really got themselves up,” Victory coach Ernie Merrick said.

Pantelic on target as Olympiakos close in on top spot

Indianapolis Colts jersey
ATHENS, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Olympiakos Piraeus closed the gap on early Super League pacesetters Iraklis to one point on Sunday thanks to a 1-0 victory at Panserraikos.
Serbian striker Marco Pantelic’s goal in the 32nd minute gave football jerseys
Olympiakos their second win in three league matches.
The result means Olympiakos are second with six points, with unbeaten Iraklis leading the way with seven points following the Salonika club’s 1-0 win over Larissa on Saturday.
AEK Athens missed the chance to join Olympiakos on six points when they were held to a 2-2 draw at home to Asteras Tripolis. AEK fought back from two goals down, with strikes in the final 10 minutes from Algeria forward Rafik Djebbour and Argentine winger Nacho Scocco cancelling out earlier efforts from Salim Aras and Kostas Fortounis.
Djibril Cisse scored twice for champions Panathinaikos but the side’s stuttering start continued as they were held to a 2-2 draw at Kavala on Saturday.
Panathinaikos, who were thumped 5-1 in the Champions League by Barcelona in midweek, went ahead through Cisse after 12 minutes but were stunned when Kavala scored twice in three minutes through Douglao and veteran French striker Jean-Claude Darcheville.
Cisse netted again 11 minutes from time but Panathinaikos now lie seventh after Saints jersey
picking up just five points from their first three games.
BERLIN, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Borussia Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa further enhanced his growing reputation by scoring the two goals he had promised in their 3-1 Bundesliga win over Ruhr rivals Schalke 04 on Sunday.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, plucked from the obscurity of Japan’s second division for only 350,000 euros, struck once in each half and could have added more as he helped his new team outclass last season’s runners-up.
“We will win and I will score two goals,” the smiling Kagawa had said days before the big match at Schalke, one of the Bundesliga’s most fierce rivalries.
He has scored three league goals this season and has also been on target in the Europa League.
Kagawa, not part of Japan’s World Cup team, has seen his market value soar to several million euros since signing a contract that runs to 2013.
It took him only a few minutes to make a mark on the match, forcing Germany and Schalke keeper Manuel Neuer into a double save.
Kagawa went one better in the 20th minute, picking up the ball down the right, gracefully shaking off three defenders and curling a slightly deflected left-foot shot past the helpless Neuer.
Schalke still failed to contain the quick Japanese in the second half San Diego Chargers jersey
and Kagawa, who scored his first league goal last week against VfL Wolfsburg, slipped past the defence and tapped in a Jakub Blaszczykowski cross at the far post.
“This was a well deserved victory,” said Borussia coach Juergen Klopp. “We played an outstanding game.”

Black: Young to start Saturday night vs Cardinals

Dallas Cowboys jersey
SAN DIEGO (AP)—Chris Young will be back in the San Diego Padres’ rotation on Saturday night at St. Louis after being sidelined 5 1/2 months by a strained right shoulder.
The 6-foot-10 Young returns to action as the nfl jerseys
Padres struggle to retain the NL West lead. He made one start this season before going on the disabled list April 12.
The Padres go into Thursday night’s series opener at St. Louis with a one-half game lead over San Francisco.
Young is coming off three rehab starts in the minor leagues. On San Francisco 49ers jersey
Saturday night, he allowed three hits in 5 2-3 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and one walk for Class A Lake Elsinore.
The day after that start, Young said he felt good enough to pitch again in the big leagues. Manager Bud Black agreed, making it official on Thursday.
Young had arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder in August 2009.
He made a sparkling season debut on April 6, allowing one hit through six innings in a 6-3 win at Arizona. But he felt tightness in his shoulder and went on the DL six days later.
Young has had a serious injury each season since 2008, when he was hit in the face by an Albert Pujols(notes) line drive at Petco Park.
Young remains the only Padres pitcher to win a postseason Buffalo Bills jersey
game since 1998. With the Padres trailing the Cardinals 2-0 in the 2006 division series, he threw 6 2-3 shutout innings in Game 3 at Busch Stadium as the Padres won 3-1. The Padres were eliminated the next day.

Wells wins 2010 Branch Rickey Award

Dallas Cowboys jersey
DENVER (AP)—Toronto Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells(notes) is the winner of the 2010 Branch Rickey Award in recognition of his work with kids in the community.
Created by the Rotary Club of Denver in 1991, the Branch nfl jersey
Rickey Award honors individuals in baseball who contribute to their communities and are strong role models for young people.
Each year, major league teams nominate a player, coach or executive, either active or retired, for the award. Last year’s winner was Los Angeles Angels outfielder Torii Hunter(notes).
Wells, 31, will be honored at a banquet in Denver on Nov. 13.
“Any time you can win an award with Branch Rickey’s name attached to it, it’s an honor,” Wells said. “You try to do as much as you can to try to make an impact on as many people’s lives as you can in this game. Sometimes, you get rewards like this.”
The award is named in honor of the late baseball executive known for Chicago Bears jersey
creating the framework for the modern minor league farm system and for breaking baseball’s color barrier by signing Jackie Robinson, the first black player in the major leagues.
An advocate for underprivileged children, he spearheaded the development of the famous “Knot Hole Gang,” to allow kids to attend big league games.
“It is special,” Wells said. “It’s an honor just to be even mentioned, to be a nominee. It’s a lot bigger than winning that award. It’s about trying to change lives. I’m blessed to be in a position where I can give back—not only money, but in time—and try to make an impact on lives. This is just one of the good things that comes along with it.”
Wells donated $1 million in 2007 to the Jays Care New Orleans Saints jersey
Foundation, which was created to empower and inspire children. Last year, he and his wife, Charlene, founded the Perfect 10 Foundation to support single mothers and children in need in north Texas.
Wells has played his entire career in Toronto and has been picked to two All-Star teams, won three Gold Gloves and a Silver Slugger award.

He hasn’t pitched too poorly in his three-start slide

Dallas Cowboys jersey
The Boston Red Sox have won 11 of 15 meetings with the Toronto Blue Jays this season, but two of the losses occurred when John Lackey(notes) started.
Lackey will try to avoid losing four straight outings for the nfl throwback jerseys
first time in his career Friday night when these AL East rivals begin their final series of 2010.
Boston (82-64) has faint hopes of reaching the playoffs, trailing the New York Yankees by six games for the wild card with 16 to play. The Red Sox and Yankees have seven meetings left.
The fourth-place Blue Jays (73-73) haven’t provided much resistance, losing all five series against the Red Sox this year. This series pits the teams with the most homers in the majors, with Toronto hitting 227 and Boston 193.
Lackey (12-7, 4.12 ERA) has given up three homers to Toronto this year, including two to major league leader Jose Bautista(notes). The right-hander is 1-1 with a 7.71 ERA in three starts against the Blue Jays this season, with the Red Sox losing twice.
He hasn’t pitched too poorly in his three-start slide, posting a 3.98 ERA and receiving a total of six runs of support. Lackey gave up three runs over seven innings Saturday in a 4-3 loss at Oakland.
“In our situation you can’t make too many mistakes,” Saints jersey
Lackey said. “In the first half of the season we were hitting the ball all over the place. Right now we need to pitch well and win games.”
This is the first time he has lost three straight since Aug. 4-14, 2006, with the Angels. The only time he ever dropped four consecutive decisions came during a five-start span in 2004.
Boston has won four straight after a three-game sweep in Seattle this week. Toronto has dropped seven of eight after being swept in Baltimore.
“This time, it’ll be two teams in there and it’ll just be about guys finishing the season strong, guys putting up numbers,” Blue Jays manager Cito Gaston said about this series. “They’re still a tough ballclub; they’ve got a good pitching staff over there.”
One of those players putting up numbers is Bautista, who hit his 47th homer in Wednesday’s 3-1 loss to tie the club record set by George Bell in 1987. Bautista never hit more than 16 homers before this year.
“It was nice to do it for the fans, but ultimately the reason you play the game is to win and we didn’t do that,” Bautista said. “It’s been a very fun year on a personal level.”
Bautista is hitting .218 against Boston this year with six homers.
Toronto’s Brett Cecil(notes) (12-7, 4.12) will make his sixth San Diego Chargers jersey
straight start against an AL East foe. He is 8-2 with a 3.10 ERA in 12 starts within the division after avoiding a loss last Friday despite allowing seven runs over two-plus innings in a 9-8 defeat to Tampa Bay.
The left-hander is 1-3 with a 6.23 ERA in four career starts against Boston, but 1-1 with a 2.13 ERA in two in 2010.

Three-point stance: 30 arrests in Gainesville

Colts jersey
1. Here’s why Urban Meyer should answer for the 30 arrests – thank you, Chris Rainey – during his six years at Florida. It’s not as if he’s recruiting thugs that no one else wants. He is fighting to get many of the same kids that Alabama and Texas and Ohio State, et al, are signing. nfl throwback jerseys
Those schools aren’t having near the number of arrests as the Gators. The only other variable is the police. Are Gainesville cops really that different? I don’t think so, either.
2. Amid the discussion of how well tailback Trent Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
Richardson has done at Alabama during the absence of Heisman winner Mark Ingram, there’s another Wally Pippish situation afoot. At Oregon, where tailback LaMichael James was suspended for the opener, sophomore Kenjon Barner gained 225 all-purpose yards against New Mexico. When James returned and rushed for 134 yards against Tennessee, Barner had 228 all-purpose yards. They coexist happily; Richardson and Ingram will, too.
3. Tim Brewster is in his fourth year at Minnesota, and the program is, at best, in the exact same position as when athletic director Joel Maturi tossed Glen Mason under the bus in 2006. I get Mason had a health issue -- the Gopher fans were sick of him -- but he’s a good coach. Brewster, with the benefit of Minnesota Vikings jersey
a new stadium and a lot of enthusiasm, has yet to outdo his predecessor. After the loss to South Dakota last week, with USC on the horizon, Brewster is making Mason look better by comparison.

Gophers receiver diagnosed with leukemia

Colts jersey
A rough stretch for the Minnesota football program continued this week as wide receiver Connor Cosgrove has been diagnosed with leukemia.
Cosgrove, a freshman, is the son of football jerseys
Golden Gophers defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove. According to the Star Tribune, he hadn't been feeling well lately and went in for tests, which revealed he has an acute form of leukemia.
He has started chemotherapy treatments immediately.
"Connor is a special young guy," Gophers coach Tim Brewster said. "He's got a hell of a battle in front of him, and we're going to help him get it done.
Cosgrove hasn't played for Minnesota after transferring Colts jersey
from St. Cloud State. His father missed practice Tuesday but has returned to the team and will coach Saturday against No. 18 USC (ESPN, 3:30 p.m. ET).
"Kevin's going to spend time at the hospital with his son, but he'll continue with the preparation," Brewster said. "Kevin's trying to be strong for his family and his son, and he will be. But it's obviously a shock. We're going to help him through a tough situation."
Connor Cosgrove's diagnosis is the latest blow for Minnesota. The father of Gophers fullback Jon Hoese died last week after suffering a stroke. And we all know what happened last Saturday against South Dakota.
The program is reeling right now. I can't imagine what a Gophers win against USC would do to lift the spirits in that locker room.
But there are much more important things than Cowboys jersey
football.
Keep Connor Cosgrove in your thoughts and prayers as he goes through his treatment

Remember the Ravens' defense?

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The self-proclaimed "soon to be champs" opened their new stadium on the NFL's biggest stage, but the party was crashed by the Baltimore Ravens' defense.
Remember them?
Yes, the Ravens added former Pro Bowl receivers Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Sure, they have two Pro Bowl running backs and drafted a pair of football jerseys
rookie tight ends. But the Ravens proved in Monday's 10-9 victory over the New York Jets that they're still a defense-first team. It's always been that way for the Ravens. So how did we possibly overlook this consistently stout and aggressive defense during Baltimore's eventful offseason?
"I don't care if they [forgot] or not, but they got to respect it now," said Ravens safety Tom Zbikowski, who had four tackles.
New York's defense was ranked No. 1 statistically last season, but Baltimore had the better unit Monday night. The Ravens' stats were off the charts.
Baltimore kept the Jets' home crowd silent by holding New York to just six first downs. The Jets were an abysmal 1-for-11 on third down and gained only 176 yards. Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez looked confused, finishing 10-for-21 for 74 yards.
Most importantly, New York never reached the end zone and settled for three field goals. The Ravens remained a couple steps ahead of the Jets play-calling and execution.
"That's about as good a defensive performance as the Ravens have ever played," Baltimore head coach John Harbaugh said. "Find me a better one."
You new something was in the air the second Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis took the field Monday night.
An animated Lewis jawed with the Jets -- even during the coin toss. There was a lot of trash talk leading up to the game, mostly from the Jets and head coach Rex Ryan. And Lewis and the Ravens are never one to back down from a war of Minnesota Vikings jersey
words leading up to a big game.
The talking became so rampant that Lewis ranted last week that at some point the Jets would have to play football. He finished with four tackles and helped organize a near-perfect defensive performance.
Lewis added an exclamation point by lighting up Jets tight end Dustin Keller when Sanchez threw a lazy pass on New York's final drive.
"It became personal when the schedule came out -- bottom line," Lewis said. "We knew the tradition, and we respect what Rex wanted to bring over to the Jets ... But anytime you challenge a warrior, a warrior is going to respond."
Added Ravens running back Ray Rice: "It was a respect thing. We respect them as opponents. I don't think they respect us enough to give us credit."
For the most part, Baltimore's much-hyped offense sputtered in its 2010 debut. The Ravens had 282 yards but were sloppy with three turnovers (two fumbles, one interception) and untimely penalties.
Quarterback Joe Flacco accounted for two of those turnovers. The Jets rattled him at times and forced a fumble and had a 66-yard interception return by New York cornerback Antonio Cromartie. The combination of Flacco to Boldin (seven catches, 110 yards) helped accumulate just enough offense to score 10 points. For most teams, that would be a losing effort.
"I'm a fan on the sideline," Boldin said of Baltimore's defense. "Just to see those guys in action, and the way they give us the ball back. We turn it over and they come right back. I'm a big fan of this defense."
The Ravens have a major Week 2 AFC North battle against the Cincinnati Bengals, who swept Baltimore last season. The Jets also play a big division game in Week 2, against the New England Patriots.
The talking between the Ravens and Jets Dallas Cowboys jersey
will cease for now, but there's always a chance it could pick up later this season.
"We'll probably see them again," Harbaugh said, hinting at a possible rematch in the playoffs.

Rapid Reaction: Chiefs 21, Chargers 14

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

What It means: It may be too early to say the Chiefs are going to stick around all season, but they are clearly much improved. This was a big night in all three phases of the game for the Chiefs.

For San Diego, the four-time defending division champion, the loss hurts. The Chargers' offense stalled in bad weather for much of the night and it died at the 6-yard line in the final seconds of the game. The Chargers clearly still have a lot of nfl jerseys
work to do.

Tomorrow's Talker: The Chiefs have a terrific return game. Second-round picks Dexter McCluster and Javier Arenas may soon make folks forget the great Dante Hall years. Both players had big returns, highlighted by McCluster's team-record 94-yard punt return for a touchdown.

Big Revelation: The San Diego offense is not beyond being stymied. Monday night, it was the weather that took San Diego’s offense out of the game. Give Kansas City’s young and energized defense credit. It made plays and it was very active.

But San Diego was clearly frustrated by the driving rain and Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
wind storm. The Chargers didn’t have a first down in the second quarter and they went 30:14 with just one first down. The team misses holdouts Vincent Jackson and Marcus McNeill, but the weather was San Diego’s real enemy for much of Monday night. San Diego’s offense was much better before and after the rain. Much of the first and fourth quarters were rain free.

Trending: The Chiefs need to get Jamaal Charles the ball more. He is a game breaker. His 56-yard run for a touchdown in the first quarter was a thing of beauty. He made two big-league cuts on the play. He had 92 yards on 11 carries. Starter Thomas Jones had 39 yards on 11 carries. I don’t care who starts, but Charles needs to carry the ball 20 times a game or more.

What’s Next: San Diego Dallas Cowboys jersey
opens its home slate against Jacksonville in a game that it is having difficulty selling out. Kansas City goes to Cleveland in what is a winnable game for the Chiefs.

Jets start season more sloppy than super

Pittsburgh Steelers jersey

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- So many yellow flags. They were strewn all over. They doomed the New York Jets in a 10-9 loss on Monday night.
There have been red flags with the Jets, too.
Not of the challenge variety, mind you. But maybe that's what they need, to be challenged a little more when it comes to discipline.
In the preseason, head coach Rex Ryan made a fiery speech to his players for exhibiting a lack of cheap nfl jerseys
leadership and what he called "jackass" behavior. The scene was one of the most memorable from the "Hard Knocks" series, with Ryan's final words "now let's go eat a goddamn snack!"
Ryan was incensed partly because his players were eating McDonald's cheeseburgers during warmups for a public practice at Hofstra University.
Ryan addressed his team again Monday night. The Baltimore Ravens had eaten their lunch and wiped their mouths with the many yellow handkerchiefs lying around. The Ravens won by only a point, but the reason they won was troubling.
"That's not who we are," Ryan said. "That's not how we play. We pride ourselves on being one of the least penalized defenses in the league. Today was a joke."
Focus was a problem beyond penalties. Running back Shonn Greene fumbled twice, losing one. On their final offensive play -- fourth-and-10 from their own 31-yard line and with 41 seconds left -- tight end Dustin Keller made a catch near the sideline, no defender near him. With a clear look at the marker, he went out of bounds obviously short of the first down.
"That was Ripley's," Ryan said.
The Jets committed 15 penalties, 14 of which the Ravens accepted for 125 yards. They had nine penalties in the second quarter alone.
The Jets helped the Ravens set a franchise record with six first downs via penalty. The record was tied by halftime.
"It cost us the game really," Jets outside linebacker Jason Taylor said. "We played pretty darn well in a lot of situations. Maybe you can attribute it to a lack of discipline, but penalties that give up first downs are bad. We need to clean it up for sure."
The sheer number of penalties was bad enough. The situations were even more wretched.
Penalties gave the Ravens first downs on four plays that were third-and-9 or longer. A defensive holding call on rookie cornerback Kyle Wilson turned an incomplete pass on third-and-28 into a Ravens first down.
Cornerback Antonio Cromartie was flagged four times for 43 yards, including a 28-yard pass interference on a third-and-9 incompletion.
"It's just inexcusable," said Taylor, who jumped offsides to turn a third-and-3 into a second-and-1. "We did more to give it away than we did to get beat. You can't blame anybody but yourselves. You have to look in the mirror and say: 'We did it to ourselves.' We lost the game 10-9 and had plenty of chances to win and shot ourselves in the foot."
Receiver Braylon Edwards wiped out a pair of Minnesota Vikings jersey
plays that would have done the Jets a world of good. He was called for an illegal shift on a beautiful 33-yard strike from Mark Sanchez to Keller down the right sideline in the second quarter.
On a nifty up-the-middle maneuver to block a field goal, Edwards ran into Ravens kicker Billy Cundiff. The penalty gave the Ravens a first down on a drive that eventually ended with the game's only touchdown.
Another third-down penalty, of course, helped. On third-and-10, Wilson was charged with pass interference in the end zone to set up Willis McGahee's 1-yard touchdown run.
I asked linebacker Bart Scott what all the penalties said about the Jets.
"I don't know," Scott said. "You tell me."
Unisciplined? Unprepared?
"If that's what you want to say," he said. "Whatever you want to say."
That was the first impression the Jets made for 2010.
You have to wonder if the happy-funtime atmosphere Ryan condones is negatively impacting them. Ryan already has had to talk to his players at least twice about unprofessionalism and sloppiness.
The Jets have made several offseason moves that reduced their leadership presence in the locker room, parting with running back Thomas Jones, guard Alan Faneca and kicker Jay Feely, all character veterans. They also jerked fullback Tony Richardson around, cutting him and then re-signing him a week before the season.
More questions were raised this week about how the Jets conduct themselves. They created a stir Saturday with the way they treated Ines Sainz at practice and in the locker room.
Sainz wasn't taken seriously partly because she doesn't take her job seriously. She's promoted on the TV Azteca website as a reporter and a model and is known for showing up to events such as the Super Bowl media day and convincing players to do things like let her measure their muscles or give her a ride on their shoulder pads.
Nevertheless, the club was embarrassed. Jets owner Woody Johnson apologized to Sainz for the team's misbehavior and vowed his team would act with more class henceforth. The Association for Women in Sports Media has gotten involved. The NFL is investigating.
From an outsider's perspective, my own included, it would appear the Jets are running a loose ship.
Taylor scoffed at that idea.
"Hell, no," Taylor said. "Everyone's entitled to their opinion, I guess. But they're not on the ship."
In the same episode of Ryan's "goddamn snack" speech, Taylor showed up late for two practices. Each time, Taylor's coaches laughed off his tardiness.
Last year at Gillette Stadium, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick kicked four players off the premises for showing up a few minutes late to a team meeting on a wintry day when the roads were treacherous. Three of them were Pro Bowlers: Indianapolis Colts jersey
Randy Moss, Adalius Thomas and Derrick Burgess.
The Jets have a short week to get ready for the Patriots this Sunday.
We'll see who has the most fun.

Ballack ruled out for six weeks with shin injury

Steelers jersey

Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Michael Ballack faces a six-week injury lay-off after picking up a micro-fracture in his left shin on Saturday.
Ballack lasted only half an hour of cheap nfl jerseys
Leverkusen's 2-2 draw with Hannover after injuring his leg in a challenge with Sergio Pinto. He appeared confident when he said the injury was nothing dramatic, but tests this morning have confirmed he has picked up a micro-fracture at the upper end of his left shin and that he will need a break of Indianapolis Colts jersey
up to six weeks to recover.
The injury comes just as the 33-year-old was returning to full fitness after an ankle injury had ruled him out of the World Cup. As a result, he will miss Germany's next World Cup qualifiers against Turkey and Kazakhstan next month and he is a doubt for the national team's final fixture of Dallas Cowboys jersey
2010 against Sweden on November 17.
Germany coach Joachim Low last week confirmed that Ballack would only return to the national team, and be restored as captain, when he had proven his form and fitnes

Everton Boss David Moyes Confirms Jack Rodwell Out For Up To Three Months With Ankle Ligament Damage

Cowboys jersey

Everton youngster Jack Rodwell has been sidelined for up to three months owing to an ankle injury.

The 19-year-old sustained damaged ligaments during the defeat to nfl jersey
Aston Villa last month, when a challenge with Stephen Warnock saw him being prematurely taken off the pitch.

The injury meant that the midfielder had to pull out of the England Under-21 squad, while the medics were unable to determine the extent of the injury due to swelling.

Now, however, upon determining the extent of the injury, it has been found that the talented starlet will be sidelined for between two and three months.

Toffees boss David Moyes confirmed in a press Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
conference: "I thought when he went over it was a twisted ankle and he'd maybe be out for a week, if at all.

"But he got scanned and we knew there was a problem.

"They think it doesn't need surgery but unfortunately he is going to be out for two to three months.

"We were worried it was going to be a similar injury to Indianapolis Colts jersey
Marouane Fellaini's but, thank goodness, it wasn't that bad."

MONTEVIDEO, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Oscar Washington nfl throwback jerseys
Tabarez, who steered Uruguay to fourth place at the World Cup in July, will carry on as his country’s coach until the 2014 finals in neighbouring Brazil.
Tabarez, who also coached Uruguay at the 1990 World Cup in Italy, signed a new four-year contract at Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) headquarters on Friday.
“This (contract) gives us the possibility of continuing the job Dallas Cowboys jersey
we want to be involved in. It’s also a life choice, we wanted to be in our country because we wanted our challenges here,” Tabarez said on behalf of his coaching staff.
“We have a clear plan and lots of faith,” he told a packed news conference.
The AUF had been negotiating terms with Tabarez since July when Uruguay returned from South Africa where they reached the World Cup semi-finals for the first time since 1970.
Players including forward Diego Forlan, voted best player at the finals, urged the AUF to keep Tabarez in the job after he revolutionised the national team set-up during the four years he was in charge.
Tabarez will now begin to prepare his team for the Copa America in Argentina next July. The South American qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup begin later next year.
Brazil is the scene of Uruguay’s greatest achievement when Indianapolis Colts jersey
they upset the host nation 2-1 to win their second World Cup in 1950. They won their first title at home in the inaugural finals in 1930 when they beat Argentina 4-2.

Teacher Tabarez ready for new term with Uruguay

Cowboys jersey

BUENOS AIRES, Sept 10 (Reuters) - Oscar Washington Tabarez, a man of learning, drew on his mistakes from 1990 to steer his native Uruguay in July to their best World Cup for 40 years.
His reward was a new contract on Friday for another cycle of football jerseys
four years to try to steer the small South American nation to the 2014 finals in Brazil, a neighbouring country with special connotations for Uruguayan soccer.
Uruguay, who reached the semi-finals in Mexico in 1970, went no further than the second round in Italy in 1990 after Tabarez had tired his team out during a long tour of Europe.
The former schoolmaster known as El Maestro, given another chance in 2006, drew up a plan from junior level upwards in a bid to improve a team that lived in the shadow of two World Cup victories in the first half of the 20th century.
Four years is a tight schedule and managing a team made up largely of Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
foreign-based players during a two-year, 18-match qualifying campaign is exhausting, and getting through was a close call.
Uruguay finished fifth in the 10-team group, with only the top four going through automatically to the finals. They then met Costa Rica in a playoff, winning 2-1 on aggregate to book the last ticket to South Africa.
The success story started then with Tabarez revising his pre-finals schedule from that of 1990, keeping the team at home until the last minute, playing few warm-ups and telling his players to relax and enjoy the moment.
Uruguay, inspired by striker Diego Forlan, reached the semi-finals in South Africa by playing good football and riding their luck.
Tabarez will not demand his players go a step further Minnesota Vikings jersey
in Brazil by trying to emulate the heroes of 1950, who upset the home favourites 2-1 in one of the greatest all-time shocks to lift their second world title.
He will instead ask them to dream as they did in South Africa that such an achievement is not impossible.

PREVIEW-Soccer-Barca, Real and Chelsea eye Inter’s crown

Steelers jersey

By Mike Collett
LONDON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - European champions Inter Milan will rewrite the record books and claim a place among the greats if they retain the Champions League trophy this season.
Huge obstacles stand in their way, of nfl jersey
course, from Spain’s Barcelona and Real Madrid, England’s Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, last season’s runners-up Bayern Munich and their arch-rivals AC Milan.
Europe’s leading bookmakers have almost all ignored Inter’s claims and installed Barcelona as favourites to repeat their 2009 success with Real Madrid and Chelsea also heavily backed.
But Inter’s new manager Rafa Benitez won the competition in 2005 with Liverpool and would like nothing better than to restore his reputation as one of Europe’s shrewdest coaches.
If Benitez leads them to victory at Wembley Stadium on May 28, they would emulate their own back-to-back successes of 1964 and 1965 and take huge delight in becoming the first club to do so since AC Milan triumphed in 1989 and 1990.
But no side has remained European champions after changing a winning manager since Bayern Munich lifted the trophy under Udo Lattek in 1974 and Dettmar Cramer in 1975.
That is the challenge facing Benitez who replaced Jose Mourinho when the Portuguese decamped to Real Madrid after securing last season’s triumph over Bayern to make Inter European champions for the first time for 45 years.
Mourinho may have got up the noses of the Italian soccer establishment but he gave Inter a winning mentality in Europe after decades of under-achievement in the world’s premier club competition.
DIFFERENT STYLE
Inter have decided to stick with the same ageing squad, minus striker Mario Balotelli, leaving fans worried the lack of investment will harm their chances.
Inter face Tottenham Hotspur and Twente Enschede as well as Werder Bremen in the group stage but will need to improve their early season form which has been patchy.
Among those threatening Inter’s ambitions are Barcelona, eager to make up for last season’s semi-final loss to the Italians, and a rejuvenated Real Madrid under Mourinho.
The canny Mourinho’s arrival at the Bernabeu has raised hopes the club can end a lengthy drought in Europe’s elite club competition.
The nine-times continental champions have failed to make the quarter-finals for the past six seasons, a galling statistic for big-spending president Florentino Perez.
The construction magnate returned to the club before the 2009-10 campaign pledging to restore former glories but even an outlay of a quarter of a billion euros ($319 million) on players including Cristiano Ronaldo and Kaka failed to yield a trophy.
Real have spent wisely, bringing in Germany midfielders Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil, Argentina winger Angel Di Maria and teenage midfielder Sergio Canales.
But Pep Guardiola’s Barca side have added Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
prolific Spain striker David Villa, combative Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano and versatile Brazilian defender Adriano Correia.
EFFECTIVE TEAM
Mourinho, a former assistant coach at the Nou Camp, got the better of Guardiola last season but it will be hard to mould the Real squad into an effective team in his first campaign.
If he does he will become the first man to lift the European Cup with three different clubs following his initial triumph with Porto in 2004.
Real are also in a tricky group, pitted against old rivals AC Milan, Ajax Amsterdam and Auxerre of France.
Barca, by contrast, are the finished article, boasting eight Spain internationals, including World Cup winners Villa, Xavi and Andres Iniesta, and should progress comfortably from a group with Rubin Kazan, Panathinaikos and FC Copenhagen.
EXCITING ARRIVAL
Chelsea, who played outstanding football to claim the English double last season, have won their first three league games with a 14-0 goal tally and have recruited exciting midfielder Ramires from Benfica and Israel’s Yossi Benayoun.
Manchester United can never be ruled out especially if Wayne Rooney puts his off-field problems out of his mind and reproduces the scoring form he showed for most of last season.
Arsenal have failed to win a trophy for five seasons but usually do well in Europe.
Manager Arsene Wenger’s best piece of Indianapolis Colts jersey
transfer business was keeping Cesc Fabregas at the Emirates, boosting the chances of a London side lifting the European Cup for the first time.
With three London teams competing, the first time one city has provided three sides in the competition, and the final taking place in their home city, there is even more incentive than usual for them to go all the way

PREVIEW-Soccer-Surprise trio make early season pace in Ligue 1

Steelers jersey

PARIS, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Toulouse, Stade Rennes and Montpellier are enjoying a surprising view from the top of Ligue 1 four games into the season despite selling key players.
Leaders Toulouse have a perfect record so far despite nfl throwback jerseys
France striker Andre-Pierre Gignac joining Olympique Marseille during the transfer window.
They host St Etienne on Saturday (1700GMT) and former coach Elie Baup, now a consultant for French TV channel Canal Plus, believes they can have a good campaign.
“I think they can finish in the top five or top six,” Baup told Toulouse’s website (www.tfc.info).
Second-placed Stade Rennes, who sold Ghana striker Asamoah Gyan to English Premier League club Sunderland, take on fourth-placed Sochaux on Saturday looking for more improvement.
“We need to play better. We also have to keep our feet on the ground because we’ve been playing with five players who are under 21,” coach Frederic Antonetti told his club’s website (www.staderennais.fr).
Colombian Victor Hugo Montano has hit two league goals for Rennes since joining the Brittany side from Montpellier in the summer.
Montpellier, third with eight points like Rennes, host Nancy on Saturday.
The leading trio have been benefiting from the Pittsburgh Steelers jersey
big guns’ failure to find their stride so far.
Champions Marseille have only picked up four points in the wake of a tumultuous close season. Forward Hatem Ben Arfa went on strike in an attempt to join Newcastle United, which he eventually did and striker Mamadou Niang left for Fenerbahce.
France strikers Loic Remy and Andre-Pierre Gignac have arrived at the Stade Velodrome, but they may need a bit of time to adapt.
“We must do everything we can to incorporate them as quickly as possible,” OM playmaker Lucho Gonzalez of Argentina told the club’s website (www.om.net).
Gignac scored in a 1-1 friendly against AC Ajaccio last week and is expected to start on Sunday (1900) when Marseille host Monaco.
Lyon, second last season, also have only four points and have been hit by a series of injuries with Cesar Delgado, Cris and Michel Bastos sidelined with muscle problems.
“Our start to the season is bad. It’s not Dallas Cowboys jersey
enough. We lack conviction, agressiveness”, coach Claude Puel told Lyon’s website (www.olweb.fr).
Lyon host Valenciennes on Saturday (1700).
Elsewhere, Paris St Germain, also on four points, take on promoted Arles-Avignon who have lost their four first games.

PREVIEW-Soccer-Chelsea ready to hammer nail into Grant’s coffin

Steelers jersey

By Mike Collett
LONDON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - Table-topping Chelsea make the short trip across London to bottom-placed West Ham United on Saturday where they could terminally damage the chances of Avram Grant, their former coach, keeping his job.
While Carlo Ancelotti’s champions have started the new season by winning their first three games with a goal tally of 14-0, the Hammers have stumbled to three successive defeats and, along with Stoke City, are the only club yet to collect a Premier League point.
With league action resuming after a two-week football jerseys
break, second-placed Arsenal host Bolton Wanderers amd third-placed Manchester United visit Everton, who have drawn once and lost twice.
Tottenham Hotspur, England’s fourth Champions League hopefuls, go to West Bromwich Albion looking to bounce back after their shock 1-0 home defeat by Wigan Athletic two weeks ago with new signings Rafael Van der Vaart and William Gallas set for their debuts.
Manchester City, whose cheque book is now closed after spending more than 120 million pounds ($185.5 million) on players during the transfer window, entertain Blackburn Rovers. City are looking to hit back after losing 1-0 to Sunderland.
Win, lose or draw, all those clubs at least have points on the board, unlike the Hammers whose form has shown little improvement on last season’s when they flirted with relegation after five years in the Premier League.
Although they survived, another former Chelsea hero, Gianfranco Zola, lost his job as manager and his replacement Grant is also having to endure anxious moments.
FAMILIAR TERRITORY
The 55-year-old Israeli, who spent his time at Portsmouth at the bottom of the table last season, is back in familiar territory with the Hammers, whose only goal in their opening three games was a penalty in a 3-1 home defeat by Bolton Wanderers.
More worryingly for Grant, who took Minnesota Vikings jersey
Chelsea to within a shootout penalty of success in the 2008 Champions League final, West Ham have played badly in all three league matches. They even struggled to beat League Two (fourth tier) Oxford United 1-0 in a League Cup tie.
Their last league match ended in a 3-0 thumping by Manchester United, prompting reports that Grant had three matches to save his job.
However, co-owner David Sullivan told the fans not to panic because the team was in a period of transition.
“We are building a new team under a new manager and transition is a tough time but game by game I anticipate an improvement over the coming months,” Sullivan told the London Evening Standard.
“When we looked at the early fixtures we knew we faced a tough time but we only managed two points from the same fixtures last season.”
Last season Chelsea hammered a nail into Zola’s coffin when they crushed the Hammers 4-1 at Stamford Bridge in March and a similar scoreline would only add to the pressure on Grant.
In fact West Ham will be lucky to score even one goal.
Since conceding twice in a 2-1 defeat at Indianapolis Colts jersey
Spurs in April, Chelsea have won their last six league matches with a staggering overall goal tally of 31-0.
Another man under the spotlight will be Gerard Houllier who takes charge of Aston Villa for the first time at Stoke City on Monday.

Houshmandzadeh pleased to be Raven after quick 'Hawks exit

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- T.J. Houshmandzadeh is embracing his change of scenery with the Baltimore Ravens after signing a one-year, $855,000 contract Tuesday.
Cut by the new Pete-Carroll-led regime in football jersey
Seattle only one year after signing a five-year, $40 million pact, Houshmandzadeh has gone from a rebuilding franchise to a Super Bowl contender.
"It's refreshing, man, to go from the situation I was in and come here," he said. "It's hard to explain, because you always want to be optimistic, and I'm an optimistic person at times, but it's hard to be optimistic when you know what you're going against.
"I'm coming to play with guys that are similar to me emotionally, the way they play the game and how they love the game. That's where I need to be."
The Ravens signed Houshmandzadeh, a 2007 Pro Bowl selection, after trading wide receiver Mark Clayton to the St. Louis Rams.
Houshmandzadeh, 32, is intent on showing he has a lot more football left in him after catching 79 passes for 911 yards and three touchdowns last season. And he wants to prove the Seahawks made a mistake by releasing him last weekend. Seattle owes him $7 million in Dallas Cowboys jersey
guaranteed money for this year.
"Me not being there, I can promise you, had nothing to do with football," Houshmandzadeh said. "Nobody on that team beat me out. If they're honest with themselves, they know that. If you watch practice, it's obvious. For whatever reason, they did what they did. I'm not going to get to throwing rocks because I just don't want to."
Houshmandzadeh has caught 586 career passes for 6,693 yards and 40 touchdowns during his nine-year NFL career. He ranks third in the NFL in receptions (451) and first downs (283) and is tied for ninth in touchdowns (35) and 12th in yards (4,995) since 2005.
"You guys will see what I can do," Houshmandzadeh said. "I kind of got disappointed with what happened in Seattle, for real. I know I can play. I know I can get it done. They know I can get it done. I don't really want to comment on it, because it makes me really upset, but it happened."
Houshmandzadeh expressed confidence that everyone will be happy with the distribution of the workload among himself and fellow receivers Anquan Boldin and Derrick Mason in Baltimore.
"As long as you win, it doesn't matter," Houshmandzadeh said. "Do I want the ball? Of course. And I'm sure they feel the same way. As long as you win games, it doesn't matter who gets the glory or who's getting the ball, because at the end of Minnesota Vikings jersey
the day, everybody benefits when you win. I'm sure each of us will play a part in different games of playing the hero so to speak."
